NV Energy pushes ahead with opt-out proposal

Utilities in Nevada are moving forward with a smart meter opt-out proposal for electric customers.

NV Energy, along with its subsidiaries Sierra Public Power Company and Nevada Power Company last week submitted a 35-page draft order to the Nevada Public Service Commission outlining plans for a smart meter opt-out provision. The utilities have installed approximately 1.3 million smart meters across the state.

Opt-out fees would vary across the state, with customers in Northern Nevada paying a $107.66 one-time installation fee along with a $10 monthly fee. Customers in the more populous Southern portion of the state would pay $98.75 for installation and a recurring maintenance fee of $9.

The commission will review the proposals to determine if the costs and benefits of the program are in line with ratepayer interests. If approved, Nevada will join California, Oregon, Arizona, Maine and Vermont as states offering smart-meter opt-out programs to customers.

The Oklahoma Attorney General’s office is hosting 6 3 more seminars on Oklahoma’s Open Meeting and Open Records Acts, from September 27, 2012 November 29 through December 13, 2012.  This is a great opportunity for grassroots groups to expand their knowledge of how these two acts work, how to successfully make open records requests, and gain access to those all-important source documents.

Attorney General offers Open Meeting and Open Records Seminars

Attorney General Scott Pruitt’s office will host six regional seminars on the Oklahoma Open Meeting and Open Records Acts. The regional seminars are being held across the state in partnership with the Oklahoma Press Association and Oklahoma Newspaper Foundation.

This year’s meetings will feature Rob Hudson, First Assistant Attorney General and former Payne County District Attorney, and the attorney general’s Communications Director Diane Clay, who has 20 years of experience working in media and government.

“Oklahoma’s open meeting and open records laws provide the framework for public access to government,” Attorney General Scott Pruitt said.  “The seminars are an excellent opportunity for community residents and public officers to learn more about transparency in government.”

The seminars are designed to answer questions concerning the state’s open meeting and records laws and inform elected or appointed officials about their responsibility under the acts. Hudson and Clay will also discuss requirements on access to public records and the conduct of public meetings.

There is no cost or registration required to attend. Attorneys can receive three continuing legal education credit hours from the Oklahoma Bar Association for attending the seminar. School board members and superintendents can get three continuing education credit hours from the Oklahoma State Department of Education, and technology center board members can earn three continuing education credit hours from the state Department of Career and Technology Education.

The seminars will be 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and are open to the public. The remaining three meetings will be held at these locations across Oklahoma:

  • November 29, McAlester – Kiamichi Technology  Center, 301 Kiamichi Drive, McAlester, OK 74501
  • Dec. 6, Tulsa – Tulsa Technology Center, Riverside Campus, 801 E. 91st Street, Tulsa, OK 74132

George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation

OK-SAFE, Inc. – November 22, 2012 is Thanksgiving Day in this country.

The bible defines thanksgiving as gratitude. Accordingly, we have much to be grateful for – God’s blessing are numerous, as evidenced in nature, in our lives and surroundings.

May we daily recognize the blessings bestowed upon us by our Heavenly Father.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Our most important blessing is the saving grace of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.  Through Him we have redemption, and a life and liberty that no government can take from us, try as they might.

PROCLAMATION by the President of the United States of America:

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor – and Whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me “to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.”

According to the White House website, the petition was created by Michael E. (full last name not provided) of Slidell, La., the day after the election and has since been electronically signed by a few hundred people, most – but not all – of whom hail from the Pelican State.

Letter to Governor Fallin – Just Say No to an Insurance Exchange in Oklahoma

OK-SAFE, Inc. – The following is a copy of the email letter OK-SAFE’s Executive Director sent to Governor Fallin on the issue of whether the state of Oklahoma should establish an “ObamaCare” exchange or not.

The short answer is Not.

We encourage all those concerned about the further implementation of the government overreach known as “ObamaCare” to contact the Governor and let her know that the answer is still “No” in Oklahoma.

11/12/12 Letter to Gov. Mary Fallin re: Insurance Exchange and Medicaid Expansion

Dear Governor Fallin,

Two recent newspaper articles brought to our attention that your office may be considering whether or not to establish some sort of insurance exchange in the state of Oklahoma, possibly a state-based insurance exchange or a federally-partnered insurance exchange.

OK-SAFE opposes either option.

We contend that:

  • Since you campaigned in 2010 against the implementation of the PPACA (“ObamaCare”) in the state of Oklahoma, and won on that platform;
  • And since an insurance exchange is the cornerstone of the PPACA, and thereby will create a system of “market-management” that is contrary to the free enterprise system;
  • And since via SQ 756 the citizens of Oklahoma made clear their opposition to PPACA with their 65% vote;
  • And since the state legislature has twice been stymied by the people in its’ attempt to establish an insurance exchange;
  • And since several incumbent Republicans drew primary opponents due to the attempt to create such an exchange, causing many people to be disgusted with the Republican party;

We therefore demand that you make the obvious happen in Oklahoma.

Specifically, we expect Oklahoma’s elected officials to demonstrate true leadership and integrity by publicly announcing that there will be no health insurance exchange created/established/implemented in the state of Oklahoma.  Period.

Further, we agree with Sen. Tom Coburn’s contention that there should be no further expansion of Medicaid; we ask that you demonstrate fiscal responsibility by opposing such an expansion in the state of Oklahoma.

OK Statewide Election Results (Unofficial – 11/6/12)

OK-SAFE, Inc. – Yesterday was the big election.  The Presidential election is the big disappointment, of course. (Anyone else ready to sever ties with California and the East Coast?)  If ever there was a time for God’s people to be in repentance, now is the time.

If you live in Tulsa County there was some good news – both Proposition 1 & 2 of the proposed Vision2 scheme went down in defeat, due in great part the Tulsa912 group, OKforTea, Michael Bates, and groups from all parts of Tulsa County working together.  Well done, all!

The State Questions are another matter.  All six questions passed – SQ 765 was the only question OK-SAFE supported, but even that one only with reservations.  Our recommendations to vote NO were aimed at protecting the people; unfortunately for all of us, because the ad valorem issue is so complicated most folks could not see how they are going to negatively effected.  And they will be.

Other good news is that Rep. John Bennett (HD-2) is returning to the House, despite a concerted effort by the State Chamber to unseat him for not being “pro-business” – which means he was  guilty of having called the Chamber out on what they’re doing.

Who’s Funding SQ 764?

OK-SAFE, Inc. – A search on Campaign Reporting on the OK Ethics Commission website reveals who the money is behind the “Yes on SQ 764” effort. (Ethics number 312002).  SQ 764 creates the Water Infrastructure Credit Enhancement Reserve Fund and would allow the Oklahoma Water Resources Board (OWRB) to issue up to $300 M in bonds.

This measure would provide the funding to implement the highly controversial Water for 2060 Act, (HB 3055), one of the most dangerous bills ever passed by the Republican-led Oklahoma Legislature.

HB 3055 reads “the public policy of this state is to establish and work toward a goal of consuming no more fresh water in the year 2060 than is consumed statewide in the year 2012”.

If passed, SQ 764 would provide the funds to make this dangerous and costly bill a reality in OK, leading to the rationing of freshwater, regardless of its abundance.  (See below the Campaign Contributions chart for further details on SQ 764).

Yes on SQ 764 PAC

The “Yes on SQ 764” PAC was established in June of this year by the Oklahoma Municipal League, the OK Rural Water Association (ORWA), and the State Chamber Of Oklahoma.  Chair of this committee is Homer Nicholson, Mayor of Ponca City; Treasurer is Arnella Karges of the State Chamber of Oklahoma; and Deputy Treasurer is Billy G. Simms, Pres. of ORWA.

The big contributors to this committee were BancFirst Corp., contributing a whopping $15,000, and the Chickasaw Nation, who contributed $10,000.  Other donors included a general contractor from Manhattan, KS, a law firm from Dallas, TX, and a financial advisor firm, also in Dallas.

How very…regional.

Last minute contributors included the State Chamber with a contribution of $3,800.

Title: Creates the Water Infrastructure Credit Enhancement Reserve Fund; allows the OWRB to issue bonds

Ballot Language: This measure amends the Oklahoma Constitution. It adds a new Section 39A to Article 10. It would allow the Oklahoma Water Resources Board to issue bonds. Any bonds issued would be used to provide a reserve fund for the Board. The fund would be a reserve fund for certain water resource and sewage treatment funding programs. The fund could only be used to pay other bonds and obligations for the funding programs. The bonds could only be issued after other monies and sources are used for repayment. The bonds would be general obligation bonds. Not more than Three Hundred Million Dollars worth of bonds could be issued. The Legislature would provide the monies to pay for the bonds. The Legislature would provide for methods for issuing the bonds. The Legislature would provide for how the fund is administered.
